Giving Back is in Dr. Sarpong’s DNA – A Veterinary Leader Amidst the Dallas Community
Like so many of the veterinarians at Metro Paws Animal Hospital, co-founder Dr. Kathryn Junkins Sarpong is committed to her community through compassionate and quality medical care to pet owners across Dallas, Texas. However, Dr. Sarpong’s dedication and generosity reaches far beyond her role as a veterinary leader.
Recently, Dr. Sarpong and her husband Benjamin, created the “Junkins Family Distinguished Lecture Series,” in the Department of Aerospace Engineering to support annual lectures from prominent researchers at her alma mater, Texas A&M, where her father, recent Interim President Dr. John Junkins, works.
The Sarpongs’ donation of time, service and endowment, follows her father’s legacy at Texas A&M. As a distinguished professor and founding director of the Hagler Institute for Advanced Study, Dr. Junkins and his wife, Elouise, funded an aerospace engineering chair opportunity for a Hagler Institute Faculty Fellow. Philanthropic support is important to the Sarpong and Junkins’ families by creating scholastic opportunities for others to pursue personal, educational and professional goals.
A dedicated alumnus, Dr. Kathryn Junkins Sarpong graduated cum laude from Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine in 2001. After graduating, she completed an internship in internal medicine and cardiology in West Los Angeles. Upon returning to Dallas, she worked for 3 1/2 years as an emergency doctor for small animals.
In 2006, Dr. Sarpong and her business partner, Dr. Jennifer Lavender, opened Metro Paws Animal Hospital in East Dallas. Veterinary interests include geriatric care, infectious diseases, endocrinology, surgery, and internal medicine. “Although I am an Aggie Vet, I, along with the entire team at Metro Paws Animal Hospital, treat every patient with an open heart,” says Dr. Sarpong. “Whether they are Aggies, Longhorns, Sooners, or have no affiliation whatsoever, we love each and every one of our patients and provide them with the best treatment and care available.”
In 2011, Dr. Sarpong passed her certification examination to become a Diplomate of the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners (Canine & Feline). The American Board of Veterinary Practitioners is accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association to certify species-oriented specialists.
In addition to her professional and philanthropic endeavors, Dr. Sarpong enjoys sports, traveling, and spending time around White Rock Lake. Her family includes her husband, Benjamin, two daughters and a household full of rescue animals from the area.
